Autumn Chores in the Garden
#1. Cut Back Perennials
After the first killing frost, cut back foliage. Leave plants like ornamental grasses and sedum standing as winter interest.
#2. Rake and Trim
Pick up fallen leaves and trim any broken branches on trees or shrubs.
#3. Step Back
What’s missing from your borders or gardens? Do you need a tree in your side yard?
#4. Plant
The ground is warm enough to establish roots. We often plant until Thanksgiving!
#5. Plant Bulbs
Plant bulbs in the spaces around existing perennials for the best effect and early color.
#6. Reapply Mulch
If needed, a fresh layer of mulch now will save the work of weeding in early spring.
