Spring Blooming Trees

It’s April and everywhere you look the spring trees are in bloom.

There's a popular Chinese proverb that says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

Here are some more of our favorites:

Magnolia x 'Ann'

Ann Magnolia -

Zone 4

Grows 10’ tall and wide

One of the benefits to the 'Ann' Magnolia is that it blooms a little later in April than the star magnolia avoiding frost damage to the flower buds. These stunning magnolias are covered with pinkish-purple blooms before the foliage fills out.

Also an understory tree, the Pagoda Dogwood is budded up now, but blooms a little later in spring. These wispy white flowers open in May and June. Cercis canadensis

Pansy Eastern Red Redbud

Zone 4

Grows 25’ tall and wide

All redbuds are understory trees and can tolerate partial shade. In early spring the tight deep pink buds cover the branches of this cold hardy tree, and in mid-spring the buds open into blooms. This flower explosion occurs before any of the burgundy-colored, young foliage appears. The large heart-shaped leaves change to a deep blue-green by summer, and a sunny yellow in the fall.

Prunus x ‘Snow Fountain’(Snofozam)

SNOW FOUNTAIN WEEPING CHERRY

(6-12’ tall x 6-12’ spread)

A carefree maintenance tree requiring little or no maintenance to maintain its form and beauty. This small naturally weeping tree is absolutely stunning when covered in prolific white blooms, 5 petaled in spring. Makes a great specimen tree! Excellent for small residential landscapes with limited space areas. Lush green foliage of summer turns to lovely hues of orange, gold and red in autumn. Requires full sun to partial shade. pH 6.0 to 7.5. Withstands pruning very well. Heat, drought and disease tolerant.

Zone 4.

Note: This tree does not become a tall tree. Lawn specimens rarely exceed 7’ tall, they just grow wider and wider, no apical dominance.

The Pink Flowering Cherries do get taller.
